Wild Wild Punjab Review: Stream It Or Skip It?
The film is set in Punjab, but it is also part of Luv Ranjan’s world, where a bunch of people from Patiala to Pathankot, who must have grown up by now, drink enough to float a fleet of boats.
“Wild Wild Punjab,” co-written and produced by Ranjan and directed by Simarpreet Singh, is a quieter version of films like “The Hangover.”
It’s not that vulgar and a bit inappropriate – no anti-women speeches (probably because Karthik Aryan isn’t here) – and if you think setting fires with alcohol-soaked urine is funny, this movie will make you laugh.
The story follows four friends: Maan Arora aka Aror (Sunny Singh) is a ladies’ man, Gaurav Jain (Jassi Gill) is the son of a vegetarian father, Honey Singh (Manjot Singh) is a rich kid from a transport company, and Rajesh Khanna aka Khanna ( Varun Sharma) is the Joker, still channeling his inner Zach Galifianakis.
Khanna goes all out, even a shot in the butt and then a kick there.
Khanna is upset because the girl he loves is getting married to someone else.
After getting very drunk, they decide to drive three hours to the wedding in Honey’s fancy SUV, which she calls Paro, so Khanna can tell Vaishali (Ashima Vardhan)—whom he often calls a veshya (prostitute)—that he is over her. . .
With plenty of distractions along the way, the journey takes longer than they think.
Without spoiling too much, during their journey, they crash a wedding, get drunk and pick up another passenger (Patralekha).
They also decide to hire a young woman (Ishita Raj) to pretend to be Khanni’s new hot girlfriend, making her “I’m over you” speech more believable and making the bride jealous.
In this fast-paced adventure (screenplay and dialogue by Sandeep Jain and Harman Wadala), things keep going wrong for the group.
As it is set in a typical Bollywood version of Punjab, at some point, the police (Rajesh Sharma) get involved, they go to jail, drugs come into play and gangsters (Anjum Batra, Samuel John) get involved.
Violence is in good fun. During the chase and shootout, there’s a funny phone call with a gun supplier about a broken weapon.
Bullets fly, cars overturn, but no one is actually hurt except poor Khanna, who gets hit in the butt.
It’s all for fun.
Men getting into trouble because of their stupidity, greed, or in this case, drinking too much, is a familiar genre of road-buddy movies. One of these films can be released whenever the comedy market slows down.
Friends can be men or women; The idea is that the trip goes wildly off course!
The last successful ones were “Madgaon Express” and “Crew”.
A film like ‘Wild Wild Punjab’ needs an actor like Varun Sharma to make people laugh.
The other three play their roles and play with her antics and let Khanni shine.
This is the kind of movie to watch with friends, maybe with a few drinks. It has some risque bits but nothing so vulgar that you need to pause if your mom walks in.
Speaking of fathers, the film features a stern father (Gopal Dutt) who warns his son, “You mess up and I’ll go back 26 years and wear a condom.”
Generations of scary Punjabi fathers never had such a line.
