Kannur Squad is a 2023 Indian crime thriller film in the Malayalam language. The film is directed by Robby Varghese Raj, who made his directorial debut. The script was written by Mohammad Shafi and Ronnie David Raj. The film stars Mammootty, who also produced the film under his production company Mammootty Camp. The film also stars Ronnie David Raj, Azis Nedumangad, Shabaresh Verma, Kishore, and Vijayaraghavan. The story is based on true events about a group of police officers in the Kannur Squad, former Kannur SP S. Sreejith is a crime-fighting team started by IPS.
Kannur Squad film was first mentioned in January 2023 with the name “Megastar 421”. Mammootty announced the final title, “Kannur Squad”, on 11 February 2023. Filming began on December 27, 2022, and took place in various locations in North Kerala and North India, including cities and towns such as Kannur, Kasaragod, Wayanad, and Ernakulam. Thiruvananthapuram, Pala, and more, as well as Pune, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Belgaum, Mangalore and Coimbatore. Filming ended on April 6, 2023, in Wayanad.
Sushin Shyam composed the music for the film, while Muhammad Raheel handled the cinematography and Praveen Prabhakar handled the editing.
Kannur Squad was released on September 28, 2023, and received a good response. Critics praised the movie for its strong performances, good direction, engaging script, beautiful cinematography, and impressive music. The film was a huge hit worldwide grossing ₹85 crore. It became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam movies of all time and the fourth highest-grossing Malayalam movie of the year.

Kannur Squad Movie Storyline, Review, Plot
Mammootty has played the role of a detective many times, with some performances being brilliant and others not so much. His role as George Martin in Kannur Squad is one of the best roles. Even though he often plays a police officer, he keeps his performance fresh and unique. His performance in the third act of the film is particularly impressive and adds a lot to the film. Fans of Malayalam cinema know how talented Mammootty is and his past performances have set a high bar for any new roles. “Kannur Squad” proves that with a good script and a well-written character, Mammootty can really shine.
“Kodambakkam Squad” H. Vinoth’s “Theran Adhigaram Ondru” has more in common with Rajiv Ravi’s “Kuttum Shiksham”. Both films show South Indian police officers traveling to different states to nab elusive criminals. “Kannur Squad” manages to balance commercial appeal with realistic feel, delivering what some might have expected from “Kuttum Shikshaayum” creative ways of handling dangerous situations and their aftermath.
This isn’t to say that “Kuttum Shiktam” is a bad film – it’s actually one of my favorites. But if you’re hoping for an explosive performance after all the build-up in “Kuttum Shikshayum”, then “Kannur Squad” will satisfy your need for thrilling moments.
The opening scenes of Kannur Squad act like a mini-movie, introducing the team, their skills, the tough cases they handle, and the risks they take. This part of the film sets the tone and asks the audience “Are you ready for the ride?”
Kannur Squad film is a decent ride, though not entirely satisfying. Kannur Squad works better as a story about determined police officers than as a pure action movie. There’s a lot of action, but if you’re looking for something new and exciting in the action scenes, you might be a little disappointed, like I was.
However, some scenes stand out, especially the nighttime chase in Uttar Pradesh where actors including Mammootty, Ronnie David, Aziz Nedumangad, and Shabaresh Verma outnumber the locals. How these officers handle the situation is more interesting than the action itself.

The friendships between the characters are okay but not exceptional. Their interactions lack warmth except for a few moments towards the end. This gap is understandable due to the troubling phenomenon affecting their mobility.
Kannur Squad film does a good job of balancing internal and external conflicts, especially with the pressures of his department after a brutal crime. When the tension is highest, the film is at its best. Mammootty shows why he is such a great actor, especially in scenes where his character’s desperation and desperation are palpable.
Kannur Squad film also explores the challenges of living in an unfamiliar place, long journeys in uncomfortable conditions, and dealing with misguided criminals. The cast, including the villains, convincingly portrays the pressures of their roles and personal struggles.
Tamil actor Kishore Mammootty gives a strong performance as his well-intentioned bestie, who has his own reasons to be upset. The script shines in showing how the characters handle strong emotions and use them to their advantage, creating memorable moments. Good writers don’t need gimmicks like sunglasses or slow-motion to get applause; They rely on strong character development.
As the film nears its climax, a character talks about how a strong leader can ensure the success of the mission. When the camera focuses on Mammootty at the mention of ‘Leader’, it is not hard to agree that he was the perfect choice for the role.
