Joe Movie Storyline, Review, and Plot
“Life comes full circle.” This famous saying is the basis of Rio Raj’s latest film Joe. The beginning and end of the film connect beautifully, leaving a lasting impression. However, the middle part of the film makes us wonder why that heartwarming feeling did not last.
Joe tells the story of its lead character played by Rio Raj. It is a coming-of-age story that shows his life from school to adulthood as a married man. The film serves as a character study, showing why we should or should not behave like Joe in different situations.
One of the strengths of the film is its well-executed screenplay. The story revolves around different stages of Joe’s life in a non-linear manner, allowing the audience to draw their own conclusions. This approach makes the film interesting to watch. The first half focuses on Joe falling in love with Sujithra (Malavika Manoj) and what happens to their relationship. Though the plot is familiar, the unique approach to the screenplay makes this part of the film stand out.
The first half of the film, about 1 hour and 15 minutes long, has very little dialogue. Instead, the film’s composer, Sidhu Kumar, uses dramatic music to fill the silences. This style may appeal to those who like romantic films, but the simple love story seems stretched for dramatic effect.
After the tragic ending of the first half, viewers can expect the second half to pick up the pace and focus on Joe’s new life with Shruti (Bhavya Trikha). Unfortunately, this is where the film struggles. Joe and Shruti get married out of obligation and initially do not like each other, similar to the “Raja Rani” trope. The second half focuses on why they feel the way they do and includes characters like the janitor played by Charlie and Shruti’s sister, who help them realize their importance to each other.
The comedy of the first half, provided by Joe’s college friends, is missing in the second half, making the humor feel forced attempts to introduce new comedy through the coach’s character fall flat. The strong writing that highlights Rio Raj’s acting skills, in the beginning, weakens in the second half, especially with convenient plot devices. For instance, Joe’s peers stop him from speaking in serious situations, which does not resolve conflict immediately. Also, the film does not handle topics like grief, mental health, and suicidal thoughts well. Joe’s recovery from alcohol addiction and his suicide attempt after his mother’s speech oversimplify mental health issues, highlighting the biggest weakness in the film’s writing.

– An Old School Nostalgic Love tale which we haven't seen in Tamil cinema for a while..✌️
– @rio_raj at his best..🤝 That Malayalam heroine' performance..👌
– Pleasant Visuals and Good songs, BGM..👍
– Film picks up only after the college episode and… pic.twitter.com/uBInc8vPzw
The title of the film Joe is interesting. While Joe is typically a Christian name, the film does not establish Rio’s character as a Christian or explain his name. The filmmakers chose “Joe” to represent an average person – your everyday Joe. Joe is flawed, egotistical, and short-tempered, he makes mistakes and learns from them. Rio Raj’s realistic portrayal of Joe emphasizes this similarity, which shows his fine acting skills.
Despite its modern outlook on relationships, abuse, and friendship, “Joe” surprisingly sticks to the male savior complex trope. Both of Joe’s partners fall in love with him when he saves them from another man. While the rescue seems genuine, this trope reinforces old-fashioned ideas. It’s time for love stories to move on from this cliche.
Overall, Joe resembles several films like “Hridayam”, “Arjun Reddy”, “Mouna Ragam” and “Raja Rani”. However, while the sentiment is similar, the stories are different. The film ends with the quote, “If the meaning of your life is lost, find it.” Unfortunately, in the second half, the film itself loses its meaning for the most part. “Joe” could have been more than an average story with better writing.
