Adipurush Movie Storyline and Review
Reimagining epics is not a crime. Mani Ratnam’s Raavanan gave us a modern view of Ravana. Art should provide new perspectives. However, Om Raut’s Adipurush has reimagined Ramayana in such a way that it looks silly and makes you feel bad for Ravana. Too much green screen effects have been used in the film, making every scene look fake. The loud background music and slow-paced story turn the three-hour film into a torturous experience.
The plot is simple. When the film begins, Ram (Raghav) and Sita (Janaki) are already in their exile. Shurpanakha tells Ravana about them, and Ravana, disguised as a sadhu (holy man), deceives and kidnaps Sita. The story is based on Ram’s journey to rescue Sita with the help of the monkey army.
The visual effects are terrible. A better way to criticise them would be to make a podcast reacting to the film as it plays. The colour grading is terrible, with daytime scenes looking like nighttime scenes. Characters and objects have rough edges and some scenes look like old 2D video games. Normally, writers create a script and then plan the scenes. Here, Om Raut took Valmiki’s story, picked parts of it and turned it into scenes. In modern films, filmmakers often use a rough version (previz) of the scenes to guide the final product. The visual effects in Adipurush seem stuck at this basic level. Raut’s imagination creates a clash between two different timelines. Ram and the monkey army look like the past, but Lanka seems to be from the future. Ravana wields a hammer like Thor and Indrajit moves like the Flash. The scene with Ravana’s piled-up heads looks like women carrying clay pots. Prabhas, who plays Ram, shows very little expression and it is clear that the visual effects on his face and body are poorly done. Sharad Kelkar’s voice dubbing for Prabhas sometimes adds to the character. Kriti Sanon as Sita has nothing to do except look pretty. Sunny Singh mostly walks in slow motion with Prabhas. Devdutt Nage, who plays Hanuman, has poor writing and his attempts at humour are also useless. Saif Ali Khan, who plays Raavan, has tried his best but is let down by poor character design. Raavan seems to be a mix of different actors’ styles, which is confusing.
The only scene where the visual effects and imagination work well is Raavan’s snake massage. The rest of Adipurush looks like a poorly done school project. The dragon that Raavan rides is slightly better than the one shown in the first trailer, which was widely mocked. Overall, the film suffers from the same problems as that trailer.
