Thangalan (trans. “The Son of Gold”) is Pa. is an upcoming Tamil language action-adventure film directed by Ranjith and produced by Studio Green, Neelam Productions and Jio Studios. The film stars Vikram in the lead role of Thangalan, a fierce tribal leader during the British Raj. After helping British General Lord Clement find gold in his village, he encounters Aarti, a powerful sorcerer.
The film, which marks Vikram’s 61st film as the lead actor, was first announced in December 2021 with the working title Chiyan 61. The official title was announced in October 2022 and filming began the same month. Production took place in various locations including Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Madurai and Karnataka and was completed in early July 2023. In the film, G.V. Sangeet Prakash Kumar, A. Cinematography by Kishore Kumar and editing by Selva RK.
Thangalaan is set to hit theaters worldwide on August 15, 2024, in standard and 3D formats, coinciding with India’s Independence Day.

The 2-minute-9-second trailer contains a lot of interesting details. “Watch Son of Gold carve his path in history with immense sacrifice, hard work and struggle,” Vikram teased while sharing it on X (formerly Twitter).
The trailer begins with Parvathy Thiruvothu’s character questioning Vikram about his thoughts, hinting at his troubled mental state. Soon, an Englishman named Lord Clement arrives in their village, seeking gold with the help of the villagers.
A local prophecy warns that searching for gold is tantamount to embracing death. Malvika Mohanan plays Aarti, a mystic determined to save the land from exploitation. The trailer ends with Vikram covered in gold dust standing strong with his community.
