Teenz Review and Storyline
Parthiban’s Teenagers begins with teenagers yearning to behave like adults: “We are no longer children! Our parents should treat us like adults.” This desire leads a group of twelve teenagers to make increasingly daring choices. In just twenty minutes, they go from skipping school to making a dangerous barefoot trip to their grandmother’s village. But their plan goes awry when a bus strike shuts them down. Frustrated, they continue drinking ‘kallu’ (toddy) as they pass through the deserted area, despite missing a friend.
As the story unfolds, his determination to prove his maturity grows, despite mounting dangers. When things seem unbelievable, Parthiban introduces strange elements that invite us to enjoy the absurd. Until then, however, the film struggles to find its direction, much like the teenagers themselves.
Known for his unique style, Parthiban adds clever wordplay and whimsical elements to Teenz. However, frequent jokes sometimes take away from emotional scenes, such as when a character quips during a serious moment: “Pis adika ponwan ipdi mis awan?”
Despite its straightforward plot, the film sometimes feels like it’s going in circles, such as the goats, cows and crows featured in its central scene. The budding romance between Adityan and Nainika adds depth but also adds to the length of the film, even though it is only two hours long. Tight editing may cut some scenes, perhaps even the unnecessary character played by Yogi Babu, which seems more for commercial reasons than anything else.
In the second half, the film takes a surprising turn. Parthiben’s character is made more interesting by Jaa’s mysterious qualities. While the disappearance of the teenagers suggests something supernatural, the film later veers towards science fiction, exploring interesting but not fully developed ideas. Jana, with its distinctive spectacles and cryptic scientific references, hints at deeper mysteries, leaving us curious but wanting more answers.
Teenz features a young cast of 13 teenagers, who deliver sincere performances brimming with youthful charm. Despite some slow parts and inconsistencies in the first half, the film ends with hints of a sequel that could delve deeper into its mysteries. Looking back, you wonder if the story could have been clearer, like choosing to call an Uber instead of walking.
