Jai Ganesh Movie Storyline and Review
Director Ranjith Shankar brings a fresh perspective on socio-political issues in Kerala with his new film ‘Jai Ganesh’. Following his earlier works like ‘Passenger’ and ‘Arjunan Sakshi’, Ranjith introduces a disabled protagonist, adding depth to his storytelling. The movie runs for a little over two hours and has a mix of genres. It includes a real superhero origin story, an inspiring story about an underdog, a revenge story, a thrilling survival story, and social commentary.
Despite tight editing by Sangeet Pratap, the screenplay could have been more creative and focused. It is often associated with the styles of Ranjith’s early films, particularly ‘Passenger’. The innovative idea of a hero with a disability deserves better story elements, especially in showing the police officers and their actions.
‘Jai Ganesh’ also touches on real-life issues like the environmental crisis at Kochi’s Brahmapuram Waste Plant. The issue came under fire last year. While most of the city remains unaffected, people living nearby are directly affected. The film addresses this through a subplot that follows a father and daughter and turns into a tense police drama.
At the heart of the film is Ganesh, a graphic designer and digital artist who uses a wheelchair after a serious bike accident. Unni Mukundan plays Ganesh, portrayed as a principled yet lonely techie, who channels his frustrations into creating a comic book, ‘Jai Ganesh’. His character also works as an ethical hacker, similar to the lead character in the Tamil film ‘Maviran’.
Chandru Selvaraj’s cinematography effectively portrays Ganesh’s daily struggles. While Unni Mukundan gives a strong performance, he manages to tone down his noisy expressions.
The film’s supporting characters don’t get much development, serving more as tools to propel the story forward. Fortunately, Mahima Nambiar, as the female lead, avoids the typical romantic plot with Ganesh. Shankar Sharma’s music, though not very memorable, boosts the drama in key scenes.
Although ‘Jai Ganesh’ does not fully exploit the potential of its unique setup and lead character, it offers an insightful look at serious social issues and personal battles. The movie, despite its flaws, offers a story that is both challenging and compelling, making it worth watching for those interested in films that reflect social truths and personal triumphs.
