Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, also known as DDLJ, is a famous 1995 Bollywood film. Directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by his father Yash Chopra, the film was released on October 20, 1995. It had actors. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as Raj and Simran, two expatriate Indians who fall in love while traveling across Europe. Raj faces a big challenge: he needs to convince Simran’s family to let him marry, as her father has already promised her to someone else. The film was shot from September 1994 to August 1995 in various locations including India, London, and Switzerland.
The film was a huge hit, grossing nearly ₹2 billion (about $60 million) worldwide. It was the highest-grossing Indian movie of 1995 and is still one of the most successful Indian movies of all time. When you adjust for inflation, it is the second highest-grossing Bollywood movie of the 1990s after Hum Aapke Hai Kaun..!. The film won 10 Filmfare Awards, the record for most awards won by a single film at the time, and also won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Best Entertainment. His songs became extremely popular and are still loved today.
Critics praised the movie for blending strong family values with the idea of following your heart. Its success led filmmakers to focus more on films for Indians living abroad, seeing it as a good money-making opportunity. The film’s style and story have influenced many other films and specific scenes from them have been honored many times. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was also included in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die and is ranked twelfth on the British Film Institute’s list of top Indian films of all time. As of March 2024, it is considered the longest-running film in Indian cinema, still screened at the Maratha Mandir Theater in Mumbai.
