The Fall Guy Movie Review and Storyline
With the notable exception of “Barbie”, modern blockbusters have tended to be fairly serious. Movies like “Dune” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” are filled with dense lore and complex worlds, while the MCU feels like a gritty, interconnected universe. While some of these movies are excellent, there is a lack of good old-fashioned entertainment – movies that entertain, that don’t require you to follow a complex story or watch previous movies. The Fall Guy aims to bring that kind of fun back. It features two incredibly charismatic heroes in fun, romantic situations. It celebrates the era when stunt work was more important than CGI and highlights the effort of the team behind the filmmaking, making it infectious and hugely entertaining. It’s a fun film with a perfect lead and a director who has been working in this direction his entire career.
David Leitch started out as a stunt double for actors like Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. He made his directorial debut with “John Wick” and followed it up with films like “Atomic Blonde” and “Bullet Train”. In The Fall Guy, Leitch returns to his roots, inspired by The Lee Majors Show, about a Hollywood stuntman who also worked as a bounty hunter. The new 2024 version doesn’t share much with the original show other than the stuntman profession, but it captures the spirit of ’80s TV, mixing humor, romance, mystery, and action, while still involving action stars. who inspired it.
Ryan Gosling is perfect as Colt Sievers, giving a charming performance similar to his role in “The Nice Guys” but with the intensity of his role in “Drive.” The Fall Guy is a tribute to the behind-the-scenes heroes of the film industry and an era when the charisma of movie stars could carry a film. There has been a tendency in Hollywood to focus on story and concepts, but Leitch and his team remember when the allure of a superstar – such as Burt Reynolds at his peak – was enough. Gosling has that effortless charm. When he performed “I’m Just Can” at the Oscars, someone in the bar at SXSW said, “It’s almost annoying how that guy can do anything.” The Fall Guy proves that statement to be true.
Colt is introduced as the stunt double of a diva action star named Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who blends elements of Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Matthew McConaughey). When a stunt goes wrong, Colt is out of work for 18 months, leaving his girlfriend Jody (Emily Blunt) and perhaps the industry behind forever. Jody’s producer Gail (Hannah Waddingham) convinces Colt to work for Ryder again in Jody’s directorial debut. The first half of the film feels like a romantic comedy, with Jody confronting Colt about leaving their relationship after the accident in front of the cast and crew – showing how little privacy there is on a film set. Drew Pearce’s script transforms into a mystery and action story when Ryder goes missing. The cast includes Winston Duke, Stephanie Hsu, Teresa Palmer, and a French-speaking action dog. The film also features throwback songs from the original series era, including KISS’s “I Was Made for Lovin’ You”, reminding us of a time when Hollywood made more action-romantic comedies.
A major theme of The Fall Guy is the risks taken by stunt performers, who hope to avoid injury and get a thumbs up to show that they are OK. These unsung heroes have made many classic films memorable. Naturally, there’s some incredible stunt work in the film, including a record-breaking cannon roll, an amazing fight in a rotating dumpster, and several big vehicle jumps. Leitch and his team balance character, comedy, and action well, although it is a bit disappointing that Blunt’s role is diminished in the second half despite great chemistry in the first half. Hsu’s role also seems underused, but Waddingham and Duke are enjoyable, especially Duke, who shows he can do a little of everything.
With a message that resonates in our age of AI and deepfakes, The Fall Guy pushes back against the CGI-heavy, character-less, humorless blockbusters of recent years. It tries – perhaps a little too hard – to give audiences what seems to be a secondary concern in many big movies lately: fun.
