Bubblegum is a 2023 Telugu romantic drama directed by Ravikant Perepu and produced by P Vimala under Maheshwari Movies and People Media Factory, tells the story of a young DJ hopeful Adhi (played by Roshan Kankala). Bubblegum is the debut film of Roshan Kanakala, son of Rajiv Kanakala and Suma. Directed by Ravikanth Perepu of “Kshanam” fame, the film features Manasa Chowdhary in the lead female role. Produced by People Media Factory, Bubblegum released in theatres today. Here’s a detailed review.
Story:
Aadhi (Roshan Kanakala) is a slum youth who values self-esteem and dreams of becoming a DJ. Janu (Manasa Chowdhary), hailing from a rich family, plans to study abroad, but falls in love with Aadhi. A misunderstanding leads Janu to doubt Aadhi, which upsets her. Determined, Aadhi focuses on his dreams. The film depicts Aadhi’s journey and the way he deals with these challenges.
Analysis:
Bubblegum aims to send out the message that failing in love doesn’t mean giving up on life. The film promotes self-love and perseverance. The opening scene is bold, showing Adhi riding a bullet bike in his underwear. The story then returns to the exploration of familial emotions, friendship and love. The character of Jaanu is ultra-modern, which is a contrast to Adhi’s more grounded personality.
However, the first half of the film lacks engaging moments and seems dull. The interval scene explains why Adhi lives in his underwear, which sets up the second half as a revenge drama. Unfortunately, when Adhi and Jaanu meet again and get intimate, this revenge story loses its focus. Adhi’s journey of self-esteem and revenge becomes vague and weak with irrelevant episodes.
Some scenes seem forced and lack logic, such as Adhi taking up a low-paying job despite his ambitions. The director has tried to appeal to the youth with peppy scenes and songs, but fails to convey any coherent message about self-love until the climax.
Performances:
Roshan Kanakala is superb as Adi, especially in the dance sequences. Manasa Chowdhary, though visually versatile, needs to improve her acting skills. At times, she seems more like Roshan’s sister than the romantic lead. Siddu Jonnalagadda’s brother does a fairly good job as Adi’s father. Brahmanandam has a brief but notable cameo. The other supporting actors perform well in their limited roles.
Music and Production:
The music includes a good mass number, but the loud background score doesn’t add much to the film. The production values are reasonable for the story. However, director Ravikanth Perepu struggles to maintain clarity and focus in the narrative, making the film seem scattered.
Bubblegum is a mix of good intentions and poor execution. Though the film tries to convey a message of self-esteem and perseverance, it falls short due to the confusing storyline and forcibly inserted scenes. The title Bubblegum doesn’t suit the theme of the movie, making it a mixed story overall.
