    Munjya Storyline and Review

When you think of Bollywood, you usually think of romantic comedies, sports dramas, action movies, biopics, masala films or even science-fiction. But folklore can also be a great genre. It takes you to a new, authentic world and connects with the heart of the country.

Films like Stree and Bhediya were well-received and now Munjya, which is part of the same supernatural universe, has released. The trailer got everyone excited, but does the film live up to the hype? Let’s find out…

The story begins in 1952 in a village called Chetukwadi in Konkan, Maharashtra. A young boy named Gotya, who is between 7 and 10 years old, falls in love with a girl named Munni, who is seven years older than him. Gotya even tries to poison Munni’s husband during their wedding, but fails.

Soon after his mundan ceremony (tonsure), Gotya goes with his younger sister to a spot near a tree in Chetukwadi. Though his sister is scared as it is dark, Gotya tells her that she is safe with him. At the tree, in front of a mysterious idol, Gotya begins to perform black magic to marry Munni, even trying to sacrifice his sister.

While attacking his sister with a knife, Gotya slips on a tree root and dies. Since he died before completing 10 days of his mundan ceremony, the priests tie a holy thread around the tree to prevent Gotya from becoming a mujhya (a type of ghost) and attacking the villagers or his family.

Years later, Gotya’s younger sister is an old woman who lives in Pune with her daughter-in-law (Mona Singh) and grandson Bittu (Abhay Verma).

Bittu is a simple boy who helps his mother in her salon. He gets a full scholarship for a cosmetology course, but his mother doesn’t let him go. Bittu is in love with his childhood friend Bela (Sharvari), who is dating a foreigner named Kuba. Bittu wants to confess his feelings, but is afraid of rejection. He gets a video call from his cousin in Konkan, who invites him to their engagement.

Bittu’s mother, who does not get along with her late husband’s brother, gets a cold reception at Chetukwadi. Soon, Bittu’s uncle asks his mother to sign papers to sell a plot at Chetukwadi. She refuses, saying the place is cursed because Gotya has turned into Munjya and lives there.

The uncle brings up old arguments, reminding her that she once wanted to sell the plot to her elder brother (Bittu’s father) to open a salon in Pune. He recalls how Bittu’s father died mysteriously after trying to burn the tree at Chetukwadi.

Troubled, Bittu goes to the tree in Chetukwadi and meets Munjya.

Bittu’s mother and grandmother become worried over his disappearance and discover that he has gone to Chetukwadi. His grandmother goes there and finds Munjya holding Bittu hostage. She fights with Munjya and rescues Bittu, but Munjya injures Bittu with his claws, forcing Munjya to leave Chetukwadi.

Munjya kills Bittu’s grandmother in front of her and demands that Bittu bring Munni to him, or else he will kill Bittu’s mother. Only Bittu can see Munjya, who is riding on his shoulder in search of Munni.

With the help of his cousin, Bittu learns that Munni now lives in Pune and is Bela’s grandmother. When Munjya sees Munni, he changes his mind and demands Bela instead.

A panicked Bittu must find a way to save his mother Bela and put an end to Munjya’s reign of terror. You’ll have to watch Munjya in theatres to see what happens.

Director Aditya Sarpotdar, known for Marathi films like Faster Fene and Zombivali, takes you to the mystical land of Konkan, where the local legends and culture feel real.

The film is strong on technical aspects, especially the VFX, camera work and sound effects, along with excellent editing. The cast has done a great job, but the VFX character Munjya steals the show.

Munjya offers a unique and authentic theatrical experience, making it worth watching.
